Mahjong Lessons FAQ
The short version: group lessons are $50/person for two hours, private sessions are $150, I bring every material you need, and total beginners are exactly who I teach best. Everything else is answered below, and if it isn’t, just text me.
The basics
I've never played any mahjong. Is that okay?
It's better than okay. Total beginners are my specialty. You'll have tiles in your hands within the first ten minutes, and most students are playing real (open-hand) games by the end of session one. No homework, no memorizing, no dumb questions.
Do you do parties or corporate events?
Yes, and they're my favorite tables to run. Mahjong parties are a flat rate for up to 8 players, and corporate events scale to multiple tables with custom pricing. Birthdays, showers, girls' nights, team offsites: I bring the whole setup.
Is there an age limit?
Women, men, couples, and teenagers are all welcome at my tables. Mahjong is wonderfully multigenerational. Some of my favorite lessons are grandmother-granddaughter groups.
Lessons & pricing
Do I need my own mahjong set?
Nope! I bring everything to lessons: tiles, racks, pushers, and cards. If you fall in love with the game (you will) and want your own set later, I keep an honest buying guide in the resources section.
How many people can join a lesson?
Groups of 4 or 8 are ideal. Mahjong is a four-player game, so full tables mean everyone plays real hands. Private 1-on-1 sessions are available too, though total beginners usually learn faster (and laugh more) in a group.
Where do you teach?
All over Milwaukee and the nearby suburbs: your living room, your office, your club, or a partner venue. I come to you and bring all the materials.
How do I schedule a lesson?

How much do lessons cost?
Group lessons are $50 per person for a 2-hour session (I recommend three sessions for new players). Private 1-on-1 coaching is $150 for 2 hours. Mahjong parties are a flat $400 for up to 8 players.
About the game
Which kind of mahjong do you teach?
American Mah Jongg, played with the National Mah Jongg League card. It's the version most U.S. groups play, with the Charleston, jokers, and the card that changes every year. Curious how it differs from Chinese or riichi mahjong? I wrote a full comparison.
Do I need the NMJL card? Where do I get one?
You'll want your own card eventually. It's the heart of the American game. Order the large-print card from the National Mah Jongg League (proceeds support charity), or grab one from me at your first lesson for $15 while supplies last.
