Mahjong Lessons in Milwaukee

I teach American Mah Jongg (National Mah Jongg League rules) anywhere in the Milwaukee area: your living room, a clubhouse, wherever a card table fits. Group lessons are $50/person for a 2-hour session; private 1-on-1 coaching is $150 for two hours. I bring all the tiles, racks, cards, and mats, and you’re playing real hands on day one.

Group or private? Here’s the honest difference

Group lessons

The way I recommend for almost every beginner. Mahjong is a four-player table game, so learning with your own group of 3 or more means every lesson is a real game night. Three sessions and most groups are running their own weekly table.

Private 1-on-1

Focused coaching at your pace, perfect for refreshers, strategy tune-ups, and players coming back to the game after years away. (Total beginners usually do better in a group, and I’ll tell you so.)

How lessons work

Four steps from curious to clacking

1

Text Julie

A quick text or email is all it takes. Tell me who’s playing and whether anyone has held a tile before.

2

Pick your table & time

We find a time that actually works for your group. No booking widgets, no automated calendars, just a conversation.

3

I bring everything

Tiles, racks, NMJL cards, table mats: the whole kit shows up with me. You supply the table and the snacks.

4

You’re playing day one

No hour of lecture before you touch a tile. You’ll be playing real, guided hands in your very first session.

Good questions

What new players ask me

Do I need my own mahjong set?+

Nope! I bring everything to lessons: tiles, racks, pushers, and cards. If you fall in love with the game (you will) and want your own set later, I keep an honest buying guide in the [resources](/resources) section.

How many people can join a lesson?+

Groups of 4 or 8 are ideal. Mahjong is a four-player game, so full tables mean everyone plays real hands. Private 1-on-1 sessions are available too, though total beginners usually learn faster (and laugh more) in a group.

Where do you teach?+

All over Milwaukee and the nearby suburbs: your living room, your office, your club, or a partner venue. I come to you and bring all the materials.

How do I schedule a lesson?+

Text or email me (no booking software, on purpose). Every group is different, so we'll have a quick conversation and find a time that actually works. Text (414) 755-9845 or use the [contact form](/contact).
